Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Mongol conquest of Baghdad in the mid-13th century engendered sweeping political and cultural changes all over the Islamic world. These changes include rivaling patrons provoking new kinds of artistic production and the emergence of new cultural centers. In the two following centuries several dynasties and local rulers competed for authority in Central Asia, Mesopotamia, and Anatolia. Many of them were bibliophiles investing in lavishly illuminated manuscripts. The constant movement of artists and their works fostered not only the transmission of ideas but also creative dialogues between divergent artistic traditions.
Dealing with selected case studies students participating in this course will explore painted books from the vibrant cultural landscape between Timurid Samarkand and Early Ottoman Istanbul. We will focus on illustrated epics, poems, and anthologies in Persian and some examples in Turkish Languages.
Students are introduced to questions and methods of research on illustrated manuscripts through readings, writing assignments, exercises, and discussions in class. With this as a basis, they will work independently on topics of their choice.
The case study’s central methodological aim is to intensify and enhance the student’s competence in systematically researching a chosen subject, critically evaluating scholarly literature, and presenting the results of their work in an academic form.
