Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to train the basic skills of academic research, in particular the handling of image and text sources on the basis of the new Latin-German critical edition of the Legenda Aurea, various image databases and digitised manuscripts. Students will improve their ability to formulate their own ideas, select and describe images, interpret them iconographically, cite literature and write papers. In addition, they deepen their knowledge of medieval iconography and their specialised knowledge of medieval hagiography.

Throughout the course, students will produce a written interpretation of a selected legend of a saint and its various representations in medieval painting. In their written work, they compare textual sources with their visual interpretation in individual pictorial media, paying particular attention to the structures of the pictorial narrative and citing both primary sources and secondary literature.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final grade is based on active participation in the seminar, the presentation of a short paper and the performance in the subsequent discussion as well as the preparation of the resulting written paper. Suitable image sources and secondary literature will be recommended by the lecturer.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement is participation in the seminar and the accompanying tutorial. The grade is based on active participation in the discussions (10%), the quality of the presentation and the answers to the questions on the presentation (30%) and the quality of the final paper (60%). The presentation of the paper during the course is a prerequisite for the acceptance of the thesis for assessment.

Examination topics

The course is evaluated on continuously and on the basis of the submitted final thesis.
