Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course explores the role of underwear production in the south-eastern region of Lower Austria called Bucklige Welt for women workers and regional development. Since the 1960s, the Swiss-German company Triumph has been a major employer for women for more than 50 years. Using archival research, secondary sources, and biographical interviews, we will approach this topic as a history of individual and collective experiences, of objects, of global interdependences, and as a regional history.

- as a history of individual and collective experiences by looking at women and their work experience, their reflection of and engagement with changes in management cultures and working routines
- as a social history by looking at gender relations in the region, at social and economic developments in the region, at family situation of women working in the factories, at childcare and educational careers of children of these women
- as a history of objects by looking at the materiality of underwear, the appropriation of fabric for own sewing projects at home
- as an entangled history by looking at the origins of fabric and the sale of products worldwide, by the relocation of parts of the production process to eastern European and asian countries

We will discuss these dimensions of the project based on reading assignments. In a second phase you will collaborate actively in research in archives, libraries, and in form of interviews. This project will run over three semester, with an exhibition as the final result. Participation is possible however, in just one seminar or in two or three seminars.
