Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Performance art is often described in terms of dematerialization: instead of a product, an action becomes the center of the piece - less scripted than a theatre piece -, unfolding between artist and audience in the present. This course will on one hand offer a historical overview, concentrating on the main centers, USA, Europe, and Japan. On the other hand, we will critically reflect on central terms of performance art, such as "irreproducibility", "authenticity", "presence", and "ephemerality", as well as the supposed contrast between performance art and a mediatized culture. We will look at documentary material (photography, film, video), weekly readings (theoretical and artistic sources) will accompany the course.
Assessment and permitted materials
Grading will take into account the weekly discussions, a short descriptive analysis of a performance, one short oral presentation, and one 15-page art historical paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Examination topics
The goal is the understanding of the historical development of performance art within the history of art, but also an understanding of the conflictual dialogue between artistic intention, reception, myth, and art historical writing in ephemeral art.
