Aims, contents and method of the course

Ziele (Objectives):
Students will develop familiarity with Dutch art of the 17th century, especially the art of Rembrandt van Rijn and his followers, and with the historiography of Rembrandt research. Students will gain experience in visual analysis, oral presentation, art historical research, and scholarly writing (in English).

Inhalte (Content):
Readings, class discussions, and research will explore the art of the Netherlands in the 17th-century (the 'Dutch Golden Age') with a particular focus on Rembrandt van Rijn, including his activities as painter, draftsman, printmaker, teacher, art collector, and participant in the cultural life of 17th-century Amsterdam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Anforderung (Requirements):
Attendance and active participation at all class meetings (except in case of illness or emergency), including oral discussion and written responses (300-500 words) to assigned readings

Oral presentations of research results (museum visits, final project)

Participation in class visits to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Albertina, and the Akademie der bildenden Künste to examine paintings, drawings and prints by Rembrandt and his Dutch contemporaries. Dates and times to be arranged. Visits will be scheduled during normal class time as much as possible, but may sometimes extend beyond normal class meeting time. Students will prepare in advance to lead discussion of individual works (to be assigned).

Individual research project, including: preliminary abstract (300-500 words) and bibliography, oral report on research results, and final research paper (about 40 000 signs plus notes and bibliography). Dates for abstracts and oral reports to be arranged. Final paper due by 1 September.

Beurteilung (Assessment):
Class participation (including oral participation in discussions and museum visits): 40%
Final research project (including abstract/bibliography and oral report): 60%
