Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Eva or Medusa? Misunderstanding or reference? If and how ancient myths and mythological figures were interpreted in the Middle Ages is a question often raised in art history. This seminar is primarily dedicated to a recently published work by Ulrich Rehm that adresses this question again: Klassische Mythologie im Mittelalter. Antikenrezeption in der bildenden Kunst. The author deals in detail with the phenomenon of the perception of myths in medieval Europe. By distinguishing between certain phases of the reception of myths, Rehm investigates the causes and the intention of this reception using representative case studies. In doing so, he opens up new ways of interpreting this phenomenon by not primarily evaluating the way in which classical material was received as a form of progress. He rather asks for the various reasons and objectives that led to referencing classical mythology over the course of centuries during the Middle Ages. In addition to the joint reading of the volume and the discussion of the hypotheses developed by Rehm, selected case studies will be presented by students and discussed in class. Thereby, previous interpretations of these objects will be contrasted with the author's analysis to test his newly developed approach.
