Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Since its existence as central European national state, Austria has been a country of transit or refuge, especially in the course of the Second Republic: at the border to violent conflicts (1956, 1968, 1991-95), as a small, politically neutral pivot during the Cold War, on one side of the braking Iron Curtain (1989/90) and within a more an more globalised migration. Refugees came in more or less unexpected waves. They were accepted as victims of prosecution and rejected as “strangers”. Depending on the perspective of the phaenomena, the iconographies changed. The spatial, quantitative and cultural “transgression” could result in shocking or scandalising pictures, but could also evoke artistic sensitivities, new concepts of representations and brake open the national artistic discourse by intercultural views.Together with Günther Oberhollenzer, Georg Traska curated the exhibition “Traces and Masks of Refugees” in Landesgalerie Niederösterreich (Krems, Sept. 2020 until Sept. 2021) with approx. 40 artistic positions, with a majority of artists who themselves experienced being refugees. The curatorial concept provides the starting point of the course. If Covid regulations allow the exhibition will be visited.Considering the changing historical contexts of the Second Republic, the arts shall be analysed as to their specific potentialities to make visible certain phaenomena of forced migration and its biographical and mental elaborations, to critically reflect and deconstruct socio-political discourses. The topics of the students’ presentations will be chosen according to the diverse strategies of representation, artistic genres and media. In addition, the historical phases of migration to and through Austria as well as the changing contexts of asylum and migration politics will be considered.
