Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The starting point and focus of the course are the extensive productions of illuminated books of both the southern and northern Netherlands, which are outstanding in terms of quality and quantity. To this day, the works present us with problems when it comes to the determination of their time and place of origin or their attribution to a certain atelier. The first two points in particular can now be investigated under completely new conditions thanks to the increasing accessibility of illuminated manuscripts in the form of full digital copies available online. This will be attempted in the course. The primary aim is to define advances in the way selected elements (for example, landscape with river, urban space, weather phenomena, seafaring, peasant life, means of transportation, men's fashion, furniture) were depicted on the way from the expressive and focused miniatures of the late fourteenth century to the atmospheric works with their richness of detail in the early sisteenth century. The extent to which shifts/intensifications of meaning or changes in the visual function of the elements may be observed can be another topic. The juxtaposition with examples of panel painting serves above all to raise the question of the developmental relationship between the two media.
