Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Reflections on eye movements during art viewing are as old as the descriptions of artworks themselves. However, it is only in recent years that art history has begun to employ eye tracking and, consequently, empirical methods in a targeted manner. The University of Vienna, with its Laboratory for Cognitive Research in Art History (https://crea.univie.ac.at/), is a leader in this field within art history. As part of the international FWF/DFG project "The Museum Gaze" (2022-2026), this exercise provides the opportunity to investigate the behavior of museum visitors using mobile eye tracking, questionnaires, and interviews in the Belvedere Museum Vienna with the latest technology. The focus of these studies is on the Baroque collection of the Upper Belvedere, in close collaboration with curator Dr. Georg Lechner. The goal of the course is to introduce students to eye tracking and other experimental methods in art history. Students will learn to design, implement, analyze, and potentially publish an empirical study. The focus of the course lies on the practical aspects of the method, while theoretical elements are addressed in the mandatory seminar. All participants will work in pairs within the overarching study, develop their own hypotheses, participate in data collection phases at the Upper Belvedere (March/April), and engage in data analysis at the lab (May/June). Finally, they will present and document their individual results (June/July).
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment is based on continuous contributions. These include active participation, oral presentations, and in-depth work in the form of a written term paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Please note that this course, in combination with the mandatory seminar, is very time- and labor-intensive. In addition to the scheduled sessions, participation during the data collection phases at the Upper Belvedere in March and April is required. Attendance is mandatory. In case of illness, a maximum of one session may be missed with a written justification. To successfully complete the course, all components must be fulfilled. Assessment is based on active participation (15%), oral presentations (30%), and a written term paper to be submitted by July 31, 2025 (55%).
Examination topics
There is no final exam for the course. Instead, continuous contributions and a final term paper in the seminar are required.
