• To introduce students to key categories of evidence for the study of Greek Archaeology, to include the integration of images, material culture, text and landscapes;
• To offer an overview of key methods and approaches in Greek Archaeology.Content:
The lectures set out a comprehensive introduction to the discipline of Greek Archaeology. They will span the chronological range of classical antiquity from the rise of the Greek polis in the Early Iron Age, through the development of Homeric and aristocratic society in the Archaic period, through maturation of the political community in the Classical period, to the transformation and expansion of Greek culture in the Hellenistic period. Geographically, we will focus on the Aegean, but we will also explore examples from the wider Greek world from Afghanistan to Iberia, and from the Nile valley to the Black Sea.Methods:
Lectures will be offered in person, but may be moved to hybrid or online form if necessary.
