Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Of all the governors of the provinces of the Roman Empire in the imperial period, the office of praefectus Aegypti is certainly the best documented, thanks to the rich papyrological evidence. Compared to other regions of the Roman Empire, this unprecedentedly rich tradition - which is available in edicts, administrative correspondence or minutes of court proceedings - not only allows us to determine the (naturally all-encompassing and far-reaching) competences of a Roman provincial governor, but also provides detailed insights into the everyday practice of government and administration. Furthermore, it is sometimes even possible to identify something like an ethical guideline for governors. In the course, the development of the office of praefectus Aegypti will first be traced against the background of the peculiarity of the equestrian administration of Egypt, as it had developed since the Roman assumption of power in 30 BC. Then, on the basis of selected sources from the 1st to the 3rd century AD, the competences of the praefectus Aegypti as well as the forms and manifestations of his government in various fields - taxation, justice, military, etc. - will be elaborated.
