    Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will explore one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world – Troy. We will learn about the difficult discovery of the site, and its long and sometimes controversial history of excavation right up until the present day and the most recent research. We will survey the current state of archaeological knowledge, including the different periods of occupation from the Early Bronze Age to the Roman Imperial period, with a particular focus on the Late Bronze, Early Iron Age, and Geometric periods – the periods in which the mythical Trojan War is said to have taken place, and in which the epic of the Iliad was composed. We will also consider the archaeological evidence for real wars at Troy, and reflect on the relationship between myth and archaeology. Finally, we shall situated the site of Troy within its regional context of the Troad, considering the local environment, nearby sites, and the wider archaeological landscape.
