Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is devoted to the Eastern Mediterranean from the 11th to the 15th century. It is a critical period marked by the appearance of the Seljuks, the crusades, the political fragmentation of the region, the advance of the Ottomans, and the presence of the Italian merchants at ports and cities of the entire Eastern Mediterranean. The interweaven interaction between Western Europe and Byzantium as well as between Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean prior and after the Pax Mongolica is a testimony of intensified complexity on a political as well as on economic, social and cultural levels. Within the framework of the course, these and further aspects such as the influence of climate and epidemics on the events of these five centuries will be taken into consideration
The reading and discussion of original textual sources (in translation), images and maps will give a vivid picture of the historical events from the appearance of the Seljuks to the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans (1453).

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in the discussion of textual sources, written exam (in German).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at presenting, in particular, the history of the Eastern Mediterranean from the Crusades to 1453 (Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans). Knowledge about the historical period as well as of ancient Greek and of Latin, are of advantage, but not compelling.

Examination topics

Presentations of the course instructor, reading and analysis of textual sources. Material for the preparation of the respective units will be distributed in advance among the participants via the internet.
