Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Investigation of the tradition of Roman imperial law in the Byzantine period, from three vantage points: history of transmission, legal history and social history. Particular emphasis on the legal codification of the 9th century, the Basilika.
Assessment and permitted materials
30% preparation and active participation in each session

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Basic knowledge of the development of Roman private law and Byzantine law to the 9th century. Participation in each session (no more that two excused absences). Prior knowledge in ancient or medieval Greek and in Latin is very welcome.
Examination topics
Content of the course combined with independent reading of relevant scholarly literature.
