Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture-course will provide a literary historical introduction to Late Antiquity. It will cover the 2nd C. CE through the early Middle Ages (7th C. CE). It will be organized chronologically, but will also follow genres (apologetic) and types of writing (Christian poetry, secular poetry, hagiography), and regions (e.g. Gaul, Africa, Italy) plus special topics such as the Urbs Roma or (if time available) monastic literature. The point of view will be external.
Assessment and permitted materials
Grades will be assessed on the basis of a final multiple-choice, multiple-answer examination that will include questions on all of the lectures.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
In the lecture I will regularly discuss Latin texts in the original (there is no other responsible way!), which will be made available as handouts (sometimes with translations) on the Moodle website. But these are intended as enrichment for the dedicated and will not be targeted on the examination. You will get the most out of the lecture if you bring a print-out of the texts with you.
