Aims, contents and method of the course

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course aims at presenting in particular the economic and social history of the Late Middle Ages in the eastern Mediterranean. Knowledge about the historical period as well as of ancient Greek and of Latin, are of advantage, but not compelling.
Examination topics
Presentations of the course instructor, reading and analysis of textual sources. Material for the preparation of the respective units will be distributed in advance among the participants via the internet.

The reading and discussion of original textual sources (in translation), the images and maps will provide a vivid picture of the role of the Western presence alongside Byzantium and the Islamic powers during this decisive period of transformation between the late medieval and the early modern period in the eastern Mediterranean.
