Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is devoted to the presence of the so-called Latins, meaning individuals from medieval Western Europe (shaped by Latin language and Catholic faith) in the Eastern Mediterranean from the 13th to the 15th century. This period was characterised by the crusades, the political fragmentation of the region and intensified economic activity at ports and cities, some belonging to the Byzantines, some to the westerners and some to Muslim powers. The defining moment was the conquest of Constantinople by the crusaders in 1204, after which, in addition to the crusader states in the Holy Land, smaller “Latin” states emerged in former Byzantine territories. Within the framework of the course, in particular the political, economic, social, religious and cultural developments and exchanges between Byzantines and Latins after 1204 and up to the Fall of Constantinople (1453) will be discussed.
The reading and discussion of original textual sources (in translation), the images and maps will provide a vivid picture of the role of the Western presence alongside Byzantium and the Islamic powers during this decisive period of transformation between the late medieval and the early modern period in the eastern Mediterranean.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at presenting in particular the economic and social history of the Late Middle Ages in the eastern Mediterranean. Knowledge about the historical period as well as of ancient Greek and of Latin, are of advantage, but not compelling.

Examination topics

Presentations of the course instructor, reading and analysis of textual sources. Material for the preparation of the respective units will be distributed in advance among the participants via the internet.
