Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will read, translate and comment on Iliad Book III in M. L. West's Teubner edition. Students will have to prepare ca. 20-lines in advance of each class, from a linguistic and literary perspective (that means reading the Greek alongside the commentaries, please see the reading list below). The number of lines should ideally increase during the course.

Students will acquire a deeper knowledge of the Homeric Kunstsprache in its metrical context as well as of select aspects of poetic technique.

Regular attendance and participation; weekly preparation; final oral examination on all the lines covered during class.

Assessment and permitted materials

Maximum two absences allowed.

In the final exam students will be required to translate and comment on linguistic, metrical and stylistic aspects of a small portion of lines of Iliad Bk III.

The language of the course will be English, but we shall experiment with a hybrid English-German style, meaning that students can turn to German if needed.

Attendance: maximum 2 absences
Co-operation and collegial atmosphere: 15%
Oral preparation to be demonstrated throughout the course: 35%
Final examination: 50%
