Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
Knowledge of the field, of the aims and research subjects of Late Antique and Early Christian Archaeology; interpretation of literaray, visual and material sources.
Contents:
The lectures intend to provide an itroduction to Late Antique and Early Christian Archaeology. They will address the definition, methodology, and main research subjects of the disciplin with attention to society and material culture in the historical context, after the end of official Roman persecution of the church and the early Christian communities. The discussione will consider the formation of Christian space in urban and rural contexts; the importance of religious space and burial areas (cemeteries and catacombs) in shaping of a new religious topography; the rise and development of the martyrial cult and its effects on pilgrimage, on material culture, on art and architecture. The geographical horizon will span the context of the Mediterranean with attention to specific regional case studies.

Assessment and permitted materials

08.05.2020: Update regarding the exam in June: The oral exam will take place on the 9th of June, starting at 10:00. It is not yet clear if we will be able to meet in person at the University or if we will have to do the exam online.
In any case, further information about the procedure will be provided at least 1 week before the date of the exam.
