Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

During Late Antiquity, a new repertoire of iconographic themes spread in the Roman pictorial context. While on the one hand the pictorial representations maintained a stylistic and figurative link with the classical past, on the other hand the paintings were dedicated to the representation of the new religious subjects. The Roman catacombs constitute an important example for understanding this age of transition. Indeed, in these underground cemeteries developed a particularly interesting art, narrative and symbolic at the same time.
The aim of the proseminar is to introduce the students to late antique painting focusing on its archaeological context. The main themes of early Christian iconography, as well as the latest discoveries, will be presented with a reference to pictorial techniques. Each student through an oral presentation and a written essay will be required to elaborate one of the themes proposed during the first lessons.
