Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal is to read all of Augustine's Confessions in German (or English) and large sections from Books 1-10 in the original Latin. We will be exploring the world of Augustine's Confessions in different types of secondary literature. The teacher is a native speaker of English and will be experimenting with a bi-lingual format. She will teach in English (slowly). Students may practice their English or work orally in German. Papers may be written in either German or English.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be graded on their weekly oral performance, their oral presentations, and on their final research papers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Careful reading and good philological control of the weekly Latin pensum, willingness to question the text, engage in discussion, and broaden out to other relevant disciplinary areas, e.g. theology and history.

Examination topics

There will be no exam. This is a seminar.
