Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular active, and continuous participation; reading and discussion of the reading assignments; oral presentation of one individual topic.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Each partial performance is assessed individually and must be assessed positively (40%). Presentations and written seminar papers each account for 40%, participation in the discussions and tasks in the preparation of the presentations account for another 20%. Missing two course lessons is allowed.
Examination topics
Independent handling of various archaeological materials and questions.

The representation of men and women, plays an important role in the understanding of the social dynamics that stand behind each figure. It also allows to comprehend the strong influence classicism had on defining late antique custom, and subsequently it's continuity. Portraits incorporate a variety of stylistic forms, and appear on a variegated type of media such as paintings, glass, ivory, marble, and mosaics etc. The portrayel of male and female figures included the use of specific clothing, hair style, and specific objects, allowing the artists to show the portrayed people as philosophers, politicians, priests, patrons, or simply to set them in the context of their daily activities. The images were sometimes accompanied by inscriptions, that defined and expressed the identities. The pro-seminar intends to discuss these aspects and will offer, beside classroom discussions, a practical training through a visit to the collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
