Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this seminar is to trace the different stages of Late Antiquity's urban transformation, with a focus on the architecture and ornamentation of public squares such as Fora and Agora; markets and shops; colonnade streets, columns, statues, and fountains. Public monuments will be the main focus, with sporadic highlights of evidence from private contexts. The discussion will examine the archaeological context, which will enable the identification of how cities functioned, and how public spaces reflected civic needs. The chronological span, which begins in the fourth century and ends in the eighth, makes it clear how the upkeep and urban design of the city were approached differently (or similarly) at various historical stages.
