Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course explores the portrayal of ‘barbarians’ in Attic painted pottery, focusing on the depiction of Asians, Africans, and northern Europeans on Athenian black and red figure pottery during the period c.650-350 BCE. This body of iconography is a valuable source for how Athenians thought about race, ethnicity, and identity, as well as how they imagined their own place in the wider world.
