Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Fourth Crusade marked an important turning point in the history not only of Byzantium, but also of the crusades. The soldiers of the Fourth Crusade conquered Constantinople on April 13, 1204, the city, the eye of all cities (N. Choniates), at the same time, only a part of the Crusaders reached Egypt, their original destination. The Byzantine Empire was replaced by the so-called Latin empire of Constantinople with Balduin, count of Flanders, as crowned emperor, and Thomas Morosini as Latin Patriarch of Constantinople. In the Partitio terrarum imperii Romaniae, Byzantine territories were divided between the Latin emperor, the crusaders and Venice. The Venetians secured their economic dominance with the acquisition of important ports, islands and coastal areas.
The course deals with the Fourth Crusade based on numerous sources from different perspectives: political-ideological, military, economic, ecclesiastical, and cultural. Particular attention will be given to the historical events, the 2crusader‘s ideology and the cultural background of the conflict between Byzantium and the West.
The sources used are, in particular, written material (historiography, letters, etc.) in the original languages (that is, in Greek and Latin) or in German or English translation.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence and participation in the discussion based on the preparatory reading (40%), oral presentation (30%), written essay of ca. 3,500 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) (30%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims at offering the opportunity to the participants to develop skills of the critical assessment and the independent processing of historical sources. This should also be reflected in the written essays of the students. Knowledge about the historical period as well as of ancient Greek and of Latin, are of advantage, but not compelling.

Examination topics

After a short introduction, the focus will be on the joint preparation and discussion of selected aspects of the Fourth Crusade. The basis for this will be a joint and individual reading of selected texts in the original languages (especially Greek or Latin) or in German or English translation. In addition, each participant will give a lecture on a special topic during the semester, which will be discussed in a joint session. At the end of the semester, each participant had to submit a written essay.
