Aims, contents and method of the course

The course introduces into historical sociolinguistics. It focuses data sources and methods suitable for their analysis. In a guided research format, students test these methods. Based on their practical experiences, they select an area of interest in the context of mulitlingualism and language contact, consolidate their knowledge through literature review, develop research questions and hypotheses. These are then put to test in a small empirical study, the results of are reported in the term paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

Three aspects are evaluated in the course:

• PARTICIPATION: completion of tasks (depending on the type of task either the submission or the content are evaluated)
• PRESENTATION in digital format
• TERM PAPER (Proseminararbeit) of 15 pages main text (without cover page, table of contents, references and appendix; deadline: 01. 03. 2021)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In the final evaluation, the above mentioned aspects weighed as follows. Note that each aspect has to be passed in order to pass the course.

• Participation: 25 %
• Presentation: 15 %
• Term paper: 60 %

In order to be evaluated, students are required to attend the course regularly at the individually scheduled dates (either in personally or online). A maximum of three absences is tolerated.
