Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Lively writing plays a central role in Marguerite Duras' life and extends from literary production in the narrow sense to writing for theater and film. As one of the first women in France to write for film or to rewrite her own works for film, she is not only one of the pioneers of writing for film, her works are characterized by an emotional intensity and an impenetrable mixture of autobiographical and fictional elements. In this seminar, we will focus on selected aspects of her poetics such as remembering and forgetting, eroticism and death or collective and individual traumas as well as Duras' reflections on writing and rewriting texts for literature and film. We will read "Hiroshima, mon amour" (1959), "L'Amant" (1984), "Agatha" (1981) and "Écrire" (1993) and compare them with the (documentary) films "Hiroshima, mon amour" (by Alain Resnais), "L'Amant" (by Jean-Jacques Annaud), "Agatha et les lectures illimitées" and the film interview with Benoit Jacquot "Écrire". The aim of the seminar is to deepen literary skills, develop an understanding of emotionalization strategies in literature and film and gain an insight into selected aspects of Marguerite Duras' work. After an introduction to the author's life and work as well as to the analysis of emotions in literature and film by the seminar leader, we will discuss the works of Duras on the basis of text excerpts, locate them within their cultural context and thus reconstruct facets of Duras' poetics in the course of the semester. Compulsory reading of at least three of the mentioned works by Duras.

Assessment and permitted materials

For successful completion of the seminar, regular attendance (course with a maximum of three absences), the written submission of a concept paper, the presentation of the seminar paper topic as well as the independent writing of a seminar paper of 20-25 pages in French and its submission by the last session are required. The use of AI tools is not permitted.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Knowledge of the texts and films mentioned above, independent text and film analysis. Positive assessment of all partial performances. The deadline for submission of the seminar paper is the last session. A total of 100 points will be awarded for all partial performances. The weighting is as follows: active participation (25 points), concept paper and presentation (25 points), seminar paper (50 points). At least 60 points are required for a "Sufficient" (4), at least 70 points for a "Satisfactory" (3), at least 80 points for a "Good" (2) and at least 90 points for a "Very good" (1). The seminar is held in French.

Examination topics

Regular active participation (maximum of three unexcused absences), submission of two written assignments (exposé incl. bibliography/outline of the seminar paper), individual or group presentation on the seminar paper topic. Knowledge of the texts and films discussed, literary analysis skills and contextualization of the works in the social and aesthetic discourse of the 20th century as part of the independently written final paper.
