Aims, contents and method of the course
The elective module "Planning and implementing CLIL in lower secondary school" provides the participants with knowledge, concepts, and practical teaching experience related to a CLIL approach in lower secondary education. It deals with methods and strategies for subject teaching in a target language and makes the participants aware of the learning, thinking, and language skills which are developed across different curriculum subjects. The theoretical part deals with methodological concepts used to support a CLIL approach and Lesson Study. It also includes planning CLIL specific teaching strategies, analysing activities and resources, and ways to integrate formative as well as summative assessment in CLIL contexts. The practical part is designed to offer maximum flexibility and accessibility for candidates with varying backgrounds or interest in diverse subject areas. School placement will be offered at the Bilingual Junior High School in Wiener Neustadt, Europaallee 2, 2700 Wiener Neustadt. The module will cover 5 ECTS (3 ECTS, theoretical part; 2 ECTS school placement) and be held on four days.
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment will be based on a collaborative Lesson Study report (approx. 1000 words), continuous assessment (active participation, research lesson plans of 2 taught lessons), and 2 group discussions.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Leistungsnachweis: Teilnahmebestätigung über die Schulpraxis (1 ECTS) und positiver Abschluss der Lehrveranstaltung (2 ECTS)Part 1: Assessment of course work, including active participation in planning, observation and post-lesson discussions and the collaborative development of a Lesson Study; based on a criterion- oriented scale. Points awarded reflect the process and the product. (50%)Part 2: Teaching and/or observation of whole lessons or sequences as part of the Lesson Study. (40%)Part 3: Peer- and self-assessment relating to course work and teaching (collaborative work, individual work) (5%)Part 4: Peer- and self-assessment relating to teaching (co-teaching, individual work) (5%)All parts must be positive (above 60%).Lesson Study & collaborative teaching (models and modes of application in theory and practice)
