Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture looks at the varieties and the depth of twentieth-century Canadian fiction, beginning with the short stories of Stephen Leacock and ending with the writings of Margaret Atwood. Students can study the prose works in detail, highlighting the use of the small town as setting and charting the range of stories possible within the individual worlds of the small town. And this trend will branch out in the writings of Rohinton Mistry to include the small urban enclave that becomes his entire world. Students will familiarize themselves with the history of Canada through its fiction and learn about the trends in the development of a distinctly Canadian voice.
