Aims, contents and method of the course
This lecture course is specifically designed for and tailored to a student audience that attends this class in the framework of the new Erweiterungscurriculum 'The World of English 1'. It provides students with a basic introduction to key concepts and terminology within the study of the English language from a linguistic perspective. Topics covered include: the history of English, the sounds of English, variation in the English language, English around the world, pragmatics and discourse, sign language, language and the mind, language attitudes, language policy.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will gain basic knowledge regarding the various above-listed aspects of the linguistic study of the English language, including knowledge of the fundamental terminology and concepts used, enabling them to engage with the scientific field of English linguistics.
