Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The monarchy is a key element of British culture and has always stimulated artistic imagination - not least as a sponsor of the arts. In this literary introductory seminar we will look at products of such artistic creativity and examine how artists have represented two queens: Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II. The pieces of "queen's evidence" (i.e. artistic attempts at making sense of and constructing a female head of state) that we are going to scrutinise are a number of poems, Alan Bennett's novel The Uncommon Reader (2007) and Stephen Frear's feature film The Queen (2006).
The aim of this course is to explore how literary texts and films negotiate concepts of femininity and power and how images of a queen differ through the ages - or resemble each other. Moreover, the course will give students the opportunity to apply and deepen their understanding of the terminology and methodology required for analysing works of poetry, fiction, drama and film, and familiarise them with academic research and writing.
