Reading list

The texts we will analyse cover a vast and varied territory: D. H. Lawrence's Sons and Lovers (1913), a 20th century classic of the sub-genre of the künstlerroman, Evelyn Waugh's satirical Decline and Fall (1928), Kingsley Amis's neo-picaresque Lucky Jim (1954), David Lodge's largely autobiographical Out of the Shelter (1970/1985), and Charles Higson's black humour anti-Bildungsroman King of the Ants (1992).

A list of selected literature on narratology and the genre concerned will be provided at the beginning of term.
