Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Educational Linguistics (EL) is a branch of Applied Linguistics that focuses on language use and language pedagogy in educational settings. Few linguistic theories address educational issues in any depth, and conversely, teacher education programs often fail to provide a solid grounding in relevant linguistic knowledge and skills. As a result, there is often a lack of connection between language knowledge and educational knowledge, hence there is a need for the field of EL.

In this course we will explore a variety of relationships between language and education, in particular as they relate to language learning and teaching. Topics will include:
- Pedagogical Principles and Practices in Language Education
- Linguistics and its Relevance to Language Teaching and Learning
- Classroom Interaction and Classroom Research
- Perception, Awareness and Knowledge About Language
- Agency and Identity in Language Learning
- Variation, Diversity, and Variability
- Languaging and Translanguaging
- Multicompetence and Multimodality
- Language Policy and Educational Politics
- CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning)
