Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This workshop will explore the dramatic literature of the period between the two world-wars focussing on plays which were also performed (in translation) in Vienna. The majority of the texts are well-made plays, some of them with a comic accent, a couple with a more serious touch, all of them delightful and/or gripping. Presentations and papers will deal with dramatic and theatrical aspects as well as questions of cultural transfer.

Assessment and permitted materials

regular attendance, oral presentation, active participation in discussions in class, final essay.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Introduction to a corpus of works for the stage which has received comparatively little critical attention; analysis of the processes at work in the transfer of these dramas from London to Vienna (selection, translation, reception, theatre scene, political and social parameters).

Examination topics

Introduction to the analysis of drama and the theory of cultural transfer, contextualization of the plays; students' presentations, class discussions.
