Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar proposes an introduction to the pragma-rhetorical approach, an integrating analytical approach which lies at the interface between a pragma-linguistic and a rhetorical approach. A special focus will be on the pragma-rhetoric of dialogue and we will explore the interdisciplinary aspects of a rhetorical perspectivisation of pragmatics and of a pragmatic systematisation of rhetorical practice. The seminar discussions will concern several aspects involved in the cross-fertilisation of particular methodological prerequisites and analytical tools used by pragmatics and by rhetorical theory, respectively.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

A major goal is to examine the correlation between microlinguistically oriented pragmatic approaches and macrolinguisticaly oriented rhetorical approaches by analysing several types of dialogue with respect to the interplay of participant role shifts, politeness strategies, the polyphony of voices, intertextual meaning negotiation.

Examination topics

The seminars will consist of oral presentations (theoretical considerations and illustrative examples) followed by discussions. Particular dialogue samples will be examined from pragma-rhetorical perspectives. Together we will discuss theoretical and methodological issues concerning the pragma-rhetorical approach to dialogue, as well as its practical implications.
