Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar addresses problems arising in communication between members of different linguistic-cultural communities. Some theoretical issues to be discussed at the beginning of the course will include: the viability of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, the scope of linguistic relativity, the plausibility of postulating semantic/pragmatic/cultural universals, etc. The more detailed problems addressed later will be as follows:
a) cross-cultural pragmatics: different cultural values reflected in speech
acts used in different languages; different instantiations of such
allegedly universal notions as (in)directness, intimacy, informality;
comparing conversational routines and speech acts across languages
and cultures.
b) cross-cultural semantics: culture-specific concepts, cultural scripts,
kinship semantics;
c) ethnopsychology: emotions and moral concepts across cultures;
d) socio-political issues: the language of politics as presented by the
media, stereotypes, intercultural (mis-) communication.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of the course is to get a view of the current issues in intercultural communication, both from linguistic (pragmatic/discourse-analytic) and extra-linguistic (ethno-methodological and political) perspectives.

Examination topics

Oral presentations of assigned topics followed by a discussion.
