Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the course is to get a view of the current issues in intercultural communication, both from linguistic (pragmatic/discourse-analytic) and extra-linguistic (ethno-methodological and political) perspectives.
Examination topics
Oral presentations of assigned topics followed by a discussion.

a) cross-cultural pragmatics: different cultural values reflected in speech
acts used in different languages; different instantiations of such
allegedly universal notions as (in)directness, intimacy, informality;
comparing conversational routines and speech acts across languages
and cultures.
b) cross-cultural semantics: culture-specific concepts, cultural scripts,
kinship semantics;
c) ethnopsychology: emotions and moral concepts across cultures;
d) socio-political issues: the language of politics as presented by the
media, stereotypes, intercultural (mis-) communication.
