Aims, contents and method of the course

Contents: This course will provide students with both additional theoretical knowledge in the study of literature and practical skills indispensable to writing academic research papers in the field of literary and cultural studies: participants will be introduced to research practices (use of electronic databases and conventional bibliographies), the use of important reference works and, most importantly, to the critical analysis of literary texts from different epochs and various genres (drama, poetry, fiction). The texts selected for discussion feature several varieties of star-crossed (ill-fated) lovers in different historical contexts. The texts include a narrative from Chaucer's "The Legend of Good Women" (c. 1386), Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" (c. 1606), a ballad by Thomas Hardy, short stories by Kate Chopin, James Joyce, T. C. Boyle and other contemporary authors of fiction.

Assessment and permitted materials

Requirements: Regular attendance, active participation in all discussions in class, one presentation per participant (about 20 mins); a proseminar-paper in English (3.500 words; to be handed in at the appointed date - ideally one week before the presentation); a final test which requires a thorough knowledge of the course-materials handed out and of all the texts discussed during the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims: To advance students' theoretical and practical skills in the scholarly study of literature and the interpretation of literary texts from different epochs and genres; to develop students` cross-cultural understanding; to deepen students` practical competence in writing research papers; to enhance students' proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Examination topics

Methods: interactive, computer-aided teaching with a some introductory lecture units; cooperative teaching units with students' presentations (PPT) and forum discussions. Use of e-learning platform "Fronter".

Reading list

Texts: Shakespeare's "Antony and Cleopatra" (Arden Pb or Oxford Pb edition), students are requested to acquire a copy of their own; a master-copy of all the remaining texts (poems and short stories) will be provided prior to March 7 (copies can be purchased at the Copy-Studio, Schwarzspanierstrasse 10).
