Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The main focus of this course is sociolinguistic field work in the particular context of the ethnography of communication (culturally situated description of communicative behavior). Students will first be introduced to the subject matter of ethnography of communication in relation to a variety of cultural settings, then to the concomitant methodologies of data collection and analysis, with a focus on Scollon's (2004) 'Nexus Analysis' method. The course culminates in students' own field work projects in which they will collect their own data, and which will be the basis for an oral presentation as well as the final write-up (Proseminararbeit).
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment is based on class participation (particularly in discussions based on selected readings); homework assignments; as well as field work, oral presentation and final write-up of participants' own research projects.
