Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This class will introduce students to the field of Ecocriticism and explore ways of applying this theory-based critique to literature and popular culture. The question “what is nature?” will serve as a starting point for investigating constructions of the non-human across a broad range of modes of cultural production. Different schools of thought in literary and cultural theory will be brought to bear on eco-logical questions relating to texts ranging from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream to James Cameron’s Avatar.
Assessment and permitted materials
active class participation, assignments, short presentations, term paper, final written test
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will become acquainted with approaches to eco-critical studies in the humanities and their application to a range of texts. They acquire the skills needed for literary and cultural analysis and the production of an academic paper.
Examination topics
small-group and all-class discussions of theory, literary texts, and films.
Reading list
A reader with course materials will be provided at Copy Studio Schwarzspanierstraße. Students will have to acquire the novel "Snow Falling on Cedars" by David Guterson
