Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Building on the basic introduction to phonetics in the Introductory Lecture (201), we will study applications of phonetics and phonology in the description of varieties of English. In doing so we will consider the relevance and adequacy of a range of theoretical concepts. Particular emphasis will be given to suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation, such as intonation, stress and rhythm, and connected speech phenomena. This will also involve further development of transcription skills and ear-training.

Assessment and permitted materials

Class discussion based on selected readings, assignments, in-class presentation of participants' own project in a 'mini conference' (replacing 4 weekly sessions) on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 December 2008 (late afternoon), project paper.

- to develop students' theoretical knowledge of phonetics and phonology
- to develop students' research and analytical skills
