Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture course intends to inform about the mostly positive but sometimes (1850s, early 20th century, the present) troubled relationship between the United States and its immigrants. The self-perception that America was "the best poor man's country" and an asylum for the world`s downtrodden masses slowly gave way to nativist impulses of exclusion. During the mid-1960s, the door was opened wide for the first time to immigrants from all continents. This, and the influx of Hispanic immigrants, had a greater impact on American society than any other social or demographic development since colonial times.
