Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this workshop literary texts and contemporary film versions of works of fiction which deal with the theme of death and/or bereavement will be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective using psychology, Frankl's logotherapy and psychotherapy (Kübler-Ross; D. Kessler) as "ancillary" disciplines for the critical reading of literary texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

PPT presentation, participation in team work, regular attendance; contributions to discussions, final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

to introduce students to the theory and practice of an interdisciplinary approach to literature; to advance students' knowledge of 20th c. and contemporary fiction, to demonstrate the hermeneutic potential of a methodological approach to literature relying on insights derived from non-philological disciplines; to illustrate the concept of literature as a "life-science".

Examination topics

interdisciplinary approach using psychology and psychotherapy as epistemological foundations for the interpretation of literary texts. (The use of the e-learning platform is being considered).

Reading list

The works selected for discussion will include Joyce's The Dead (1914) (text and film version), the novel The Trick is to Keep Breathing (1989) by the Scottish novelist Janice Galloway - featuring a heroine who develops anorexia and severe mental illness as a consequence of her failure to cope with her lover's untimely death; several short stories by Eilis Ni Dhuibhne; Carlo Gebler's Room 303 (2007) - a sensitive account of the devastating effect the tragic death of the only son, killed in a terrorist attack, has on his parents; and, finally, the film version of PS, I Love You (2007), based on Cecelia Ahern's bestselling novel, will be analysed and compared with the novel.
