Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar is addressed to PhD candidates who are embarking on or are currently writing a PhD thesis in the fields of English and American Studies (Literature and Culture). The seminar will give participants the opportunity to present their projects and to discuss key issues or unresolved problems of their work in progress in class. Participants will receive critical feedback concerning their methodological and theoretical approach. Practical guidance concerning, for example, formal requirements, approaching a topic and structuring the argumentation, will also be offered.
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular attendance; active in-class participation; reading assignments; oral presentation of the PhD project, preferably accompanied by a ppt presentation; handout including a short summary and the prospective structure of the thesis; providing the class with and guiding an in-class discussion of a representative excerpt of a text/cultural product that is analyzed in the thesis.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The main aim of the class will be to support participants' work on their PhD thesis. The extensive presentation of the project and the ensuing in-class discussion will provide critical feedback.
Examination topics
Presentations by students, based on ppt presentations and handouts; close readings and critical analysis of text excerpts; forum discussions; critical examination of the PhD projects; moodle.
