Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Given the unprecedented spread of English as a world language, it is appropriate to enquire into the major historical, socio-political and linguistic developments as well as current debates in World Englishes in an attempt to arrive at a balanced perspective on English as 'the global language'.
In this course, we will examine the following themes: the historical, social and political context; the origins of pidgins and creoles; the ownership of English; variation across Englishes; standard language ideology; the internationalisation and indigenisation of English, linguistic imperialism, the future of World Englishes.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will be assessed on the basis of oral presentations, participation in discussions in the weekly session and a short final essay.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of this course is to familiarize participants with both the relevant theoretical background underlying these issues and their implications for the description of English as well as for language policy and pedagogy.

Examination topics

The course will be designed to focus on participants' own presentations and class discussion, based on a critical reading of relevant texts.
