Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Our focus will be on the diversity of cultural identities to be found within the United Kingdom. We will consider in particular national identities, as well as ethnic, class, regional, age and gender identities. We will look at various topics, e.g. Englandism, the dominant national narrative, the land itself and its meanings, images of Princess Diana, the heritage industry, monarchy and modernity, to consider how identities are constructed and what it might mean to be British today.
There are no prescribed texts. Supplementary material can be found in the accompanying reader, available from the Copy-Studio in the Schwarzspanierstrasse.

Assessment and permitted materials

This will be on the basis of a final 90-minute written examination.
