Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Every autumn, the Swedish Academy awards the Nobel prize in literature for "outstanding achievements" in the fields of narrative fiction, poetry or drama. While there is an explicit commitment to distinguish writers "from many different languages and cultural backgrounds", anglophone writers feature most often on the list of literary laureates. In this course, we will read texts by writers as ideologically antipodal as V. S. Naipaul and Rudyard Kipling, and as geographically and stylistically diverse as Patrick White and Rabindranath Tagore. While we will concentrate on acquiring and applying basic interpretative skills, we will also debate the various issues implied in the concept of 'literary excellence'.
