Aims, contents and method of the course
This is a lecture course examining the emergence of various forms of Irish popular music since the 1950s, and the role that music has played in the transformation of Irish society during this time. The approach is not musicological but cultural historical in outlook and methodology, as the various musical phenomena will be considered in relation to the wider social, cultural and political landscapes of Ireland over the past fifty years.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
1. To recognise the major trends in twentieth-century Irish history;2. To appreciate the structural economy of the dominant forms of Irish music (folk, popular and art), and to recognise the various genres subsisting within those forms from the 1950s to the present;3. To appreciate the ways in which popular music engages with discourses of gender, class and race;
Examination topics
1. To offer an overview of Irish political, social and cultural history during the twentieth century;3. To consider the relationship between indigenous and international trends;5. To develop the critical faculty of listening as part of the critique of popular musical discourse.
