Note: Classes take place between 8.30 and 9.30, even though u:space says something different. There are 10 60-minute sessions (instead of 14 45-minute sessions).

This is NOT a lecture; attendance is compulsory (see “Mindestanforderungen”).

Small group visits to the English and American Studies Library will take place in various time slots within a fixed period: dates to be announced.

A tutorial accompanies the lecture course in which participants will revise the theoretical concepts discussed in the lecture as well as practice the most important aspects of information and research literacy. The tutorial will also prepare students for future Proseminar and Seminar classes as they will learn how research can be conducted and presented in the form of a written paper. The parallel tutorials are on Wednesdays (18-20 in SR5) and Fridays (14-16 in SR5). Attendance is not mandatory. Precise dates to be announced on moodle.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims: Students know fundamental concepts and strategies of academic work, with a special focus on literature and information research. They are familiar with the many information resources relating to English and American Studies and are able to make informed choices as to which to use when addressing academic problems. They know about the requirements of academic best practice. They are able to understand the relevance of information literacy for their future professional practices.
Contents: Concepts and strategies of academic work, with a special focus on literature and information research; information sources for English and American Studies; academic best practice; information literacy in academic and school environments
Methods: Blended learning: activating lecture, teacher input, some inverted lecture sessions, individual and group online activities in Moodle and the social media.

Assessment and permitted materials

Class and online participation/activities/quizzes, learning diary, two library visits, a graded written assignment

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance (max. 1 absence)
1) Learning diary (30%)
2) Tour of the English and American Studies Library (10%)
3) Visit to and report on another library (10%)
4) Written assignment (20%)
Class and online participation/activities/quizzes (30%) must be done in addition to the four named parts.
Grading scale: 1 (sehr gut) 100-90%; 2 (gut) 89-80%; 3 (befriedigend), 79-70%; 4 (genügend) 69-60%; 5 (nicht genügend) 59-0%.
