Aims, contents and method of the course
Aims: Students know fundamental concepts and strategies of academic work, with a special focus on literature and information research. They are familiar with the many information resources relating to English and American Studies and are able to make informed choices as to which to use when addressing academic problems. They know about the requirements of academic best practice. They are able to understand the relevance of information literacy for their future professional practices.Contents: Concepts and strategies of academic work, with a special focus on literature and information research; information sources for English and American Studies; academic best practice; information literacy in academic and school environmentsMethods: Online synchronous learning: teacher input, some inverted lecture sessions, individual and group online activities in Moodle, including Collaborate.
Assessment and permitted materials
Four learning diary entries, two library visits, individual and group online activities in moodle.* Your tour of the English and American Studies Library will take place virtually. Depending on circumstances and the university’s library policies in May/June, there may be optional guided tours for those who are interested, but places on these cannot be guaranteed.
* Your visit to another library will probably take place virtually, although a physical visit may be possible depending on circumstances and the university’s library policies in May/June.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Online attendance (max. 1 absence) – weekly, pre-defined group and individual online activities (Moodle, Collaborate) count as attendance.1) Four learning diary entries relating to sessions 1-3, 4-5, 6 and 7 (40% in all (6%, 9%, 11%, 14%), uploaded by 28.03., 09.05., 06.06. and 27.06. respectively. All four uploads are required even if you missed one of the sessions.)
2) "Tour" of the English and American Studies Library (15%)
3) "Visit" to and report on another library (up to 15%, answer questions about library visit by 30.06., 23.55)
