Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture course forms the first part of a one-year introductory program that aims at providing first-year students of English with an overview of the major areas of linguistic knowledge. In the first semester, we study ways of describing and transcribing the sounds and sound system of English (phonetics/phonology). We then consider how language varies in relation to different social and geographical factors and how this variation may be described (sociolinguistics). We examine how language functions in communication and how humans use language to create meaning in interaction (pragmatics, discourse analysis). Finally, we analyze the ways in which children learn their first language (first language acquisition) and in which people learn further languages at a later stage (second language acquisition).

These courses are an additional offer to help you pass the exam, attendance is not mandatory.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination (two dates per semester), multiple option (90 minute "Modulprüfung" in conjunction with Language Analysis).
No materials permitted in the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum pass level: Both parts of the Modulprüfung in combination must reach 60% while one part may not be any lower than 55% (with the other part making up the missing percentages to reach the 60% overall).

Students will be familiar with the basic principles of phonetics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, first and second language acquisition and will be able to apply their knowledge to English texts. Students will be able to read English in phonemic transcription.

Examination topics

All the topics covered in the lectures and in the required readings; a list of chapters from the two prescribed books will be provided on Moodle.
