Aims, contents and method of the course

Building on the introductory module (STEOP), this course discusses the basics and ethics of academic writing and research methodology with the help of hands-on examples from English linguistics. Students will apply some of the methods introduced in the course to real language data and will present the findings of their projects in class.

Students are familiar with:

- The basic principles and ethics of academic research

- Different qualitative and quantitative approaches to analysing data

- The basic conventions of academic writing

- carry out a guided research project in English linguistics based on knowledge acquired in the introductory module (STEOP)

Methods:
Group interaction, presentations, discussions, lecturer input, autonomous research and academic writing

Assessment and permitted materials

1) Pre-mini paper bibliography (10%)
2) "CC text" (short essay of 350-450 words) related to your MP topic (10%)
3) Mini paper on topic of your choice (2500 words +/- 10%)
- First draft (40%) PLUS
- "Major" or "partial" rewrite (10%) after feedback on first draft
4) Group project and presentation (20%)
5) Other assignments, participation in class (incl. readings), submitting mandatory assignments on time (10%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The first 4 assignments above constitute mandatory requirements for this course ("zwingend vorgeschriebene Leistungen").
If two or more of the four mandatory tasks are negative (60% or below), you fail the class, regardless of what the overall score is otherwise.
